NEW SLONIMSKY BOOK JUST PUBLISHED
Dear Dorothy – Letters from Nicolas Slonimsky to Dorothy Adlow has just been published by the University of Rochester Press. The volume, edited by their daughter Electra Slonimsky Yourke, includes some 250 letters that Slonimsky wrote to his wife from his extensive travels in the U.S. and abroad over a period of some 30 years. In his role as conductor, lecturer, and musical ambassador, Slonimsky presented modern American music to new audiences, interacting with composers and musicians, leaders and dissidents, all the while absorbing the distinct musical culture of each land. His frequent letters home originate in Paris, Berlin, Hollywood, Central and South America, the Soviet Union and many of its (then) satellite countries. Full of information and anecdote, these letters are, as Carol Oja notes in her Foreword, “a compulsively good read.”
